How Blessed We Are

Being in the hospital for sixteen days (and my previous two week adventure and twelve day adventure) has opened my eyes to the blessings we have in our beloved USA.

The view from my room is a brick wall. Feeling the need for some kind of view, I walk to this one hallway which has a wide window with a better view. From there, I can see our beautiful red, white, and blue flag flying in the breeze. Today as I looked at that flag, blessings came to mind of how available medical help is to us. Yes I agree the medical costs in the USA are extremely high, insurance costs are extremely high; but I do attribute most of that to lawyers and those who are hungry to get money in their pockets no matter what it takes.

However before I was admitted to the hospital this time, I was in the Emergency Room where I had access to whatever medical help was necessary. Blood tests and CT Scans were done within a couple hours and results came within a few more hours. A hospital room was available for me that evening and my surgeon was there to "greet" me. Within those two weeks, I had IVs, PICC line, medications, surgery, and the list goes on.

If I was living in some other countries in the world, I probably would have died from the abscess and blood clot that I had. The reason would be because of having to wait maybe even a couple of weeks for a CT Scan. Other countries I would have died because of no medical help available.

We are so quick to ridicule and point fingers as to all that is wrong in our country. Yet, there are times we need to stop and count our blessings that we live where we live.

My heart aches for those young people who cannot afford health insurance. Changes are needed in health care in this country. But I don't feel those changes should bring us "up to par" (as many have said) as other medical care throughout the world. We may have piles of medical bills haunting us each month. Those mounding medical bills, however, allow you to seek help immediately when needed. That is a blessing and one I am very grateful for.

Rondi, you've been in my thoughts and prayers. I'm so thankful you now know what the problem was. I'm sorry I never came to visit you during all those days stuck in the hospital. Please forgive me!
Love, Thereasa
