Celebrating Motherhood

In years past, I have never been one who enjoyed Mother's Day. Why do children have to be nice to their mothers because it is a holiday? Shouldn't children do nice things for their moms just because they love them? And now that my mom has passed away, Mother's Day is difficult for me because it is just another day that reminds me how very much I miss her.

But this year, for some reason, I felt inspired to celebrate Motherhood; and we joined together as family for that celebration. I love my children, I love the women that have married my sons, I love my daughters and the wonderful women they have turned out to be, and I love the grandchildren that bring such joy to my life.

The guys took charge of dinner, barbecuing and making sides, and cleaning up afterwards. All of this was a great treat. Look at some of these faces of the grandchildren and you will see how I enjoy every day being Grandma's Day.

These two pictures of little Kyle cracked me up. Kyle, for some reason, loves to go underneath our kitchen table. In the first picture you can see that he is holding a rolling pin. In the next picture you will think he is ready to hit Isabella over the head; but, I just happened to click the picture at the perfect time for a perfect picture (he had no intentions of hitting Isabella over the head).
When we were in Myrtle Beach this winter, we walked the beach and picked up seashells. I have had them in the backyard and Isabella is fascinated by them. She loves taking the little shells, putting them in the big shell, and then hiding them by putting another big shell on top of the other.
Braydon and Drake are great buddies. One of their favorite things to do is to build with Trio blocks and with Legos. They love being cousins.
This little boy, Kyle, is one of the happiest little boys you will ever meet. There is always a smile on his face and happiness in his eyes. And, he even lets his Grandma put sticky notes on his face.
I love this picture of Shannon and Kyle. Their faces portray "like mother, like son".
As I had said before, the guys did the barbecuing of hamburgers and hot dogs (we kept the meal simple).
You know that saying, "too many cooks spoil the broth"? Well, too many guys did not spoil the barbecue.
I received the most fantastic Mother's Day gift. Maren and Meigan stayed up until 1:30 in the morning making these beautiful flower pots. They took pictures from each family and arranged them on the flower pots. This is the plant with Chad's family...
...and this is the flower pot with Kim's family...
...and this is the one for Marshall's family...
...and then there is Kyle's family....
...and last of all, Maren's family.
I absolutely love Baskin Robbins ice cream cake. And how blessed we are to have the best Baskin Robbins worker as part of our family. She made a beautiful cake that looked like a woven basket with flowers in it. Here we are, the five moms (and one Grandma)...Shannon, Me, Holli, Meigan and Maren.
Everyone loved eating the cake, not just me. Meigan will shoot me for posting this picture but I love watching her enjoy food. And to think I am a size 0 just like she is (yeah, that'll be the day..I was bigger than a size 0 when I was born).
Maren and Isabella loved the cake, too (and Maren also will shoot me for posting this picture).
And you can tell by Gabi's face that she loved eating ice cream cake.
Pictures like these make me proud to be a mom and a grandma. Don't you think Marshall takes a lovely picture?!! (Holland, Marshall and Kyle)
This little boy loves his daddy. And I have to say that this daddy loves his little boy.
Kyle is watching the hockey game with Holland. Look at those profiles. Kyle and Holland look like twins.
Can you believe a four month old little boy will sit with his dad and watch a hockey game? Believe me, it is in the genes. It has been passed on from a generation to a generation to a generation. Holland's great grandpa Petersen would be proud.
We had a great day and I just wish that Kim and her family and also Emma and Hayes could have been with us. That would have been the most perfect Mother's Day. But the one I had this year was pretty darn close.
