My Special Friend-Hatcher

OK, while we were gone to Florida to see Eric's mom, the kids back home in Beaumont decided it was time to give Hatcher a bath and teach him how to be an indoor dog. From the video you can see that it did not take much training. Hatcher at one time was Marshall's dog; but through the past five years, Hatcher has become my dog, me an anti-dog person. I guess I never realized how much you could love a dog and get attached to them. I remember when we had to put Ender, the lab, to sleep. I cried for a few days because I missed him.

Hatcher probably should have been an indoor dog from the first day we had him. But, he has been a trooper and stayed outside all these years in the rain, sleet, cold and icy weather and the steaming heat of the summers. It is time for him to be inside and keep me company and be treated with dignity, not some dog that is treated like a dog from an alley somewhere.

I know it will take a little bit of training and lots of love. And, I think Eric is beginning to agree with the idea; he even stated it would be safer for me to have Hatcher inside and not outside. So, tomorrow when we get home, I start letting Hatcher stay in the house with me; and hopefully soon he will be a totally inside dog.

Thank you Holli, Maren and Kyle for coming up with the idea. You had more guts than me; but now, I am following through with your wonderful idea.

Oh, I don't think Hatcher was ever treated like an "alley dog." He's always been spoiled rotten - even if he was outside. I mean, that dog gets about 3 X's the amount of biscuits than Ellie!

And, truth be told, the idea to bring Hatcher inside was actually born of a different idea entirely... one you'll have to find out about later.

It just so happened that in the process, we discovered how well-behaved he is, how good with the grandkids he is, and how SMART he is. We were so amazed that... well... the following idea was hatched. (No pun intended!)

Personally, I know how much joy Ellie brings me. She truly keeps me bouyed up on bad days. There is something so special about dogs - the way they seem to understand what we need, even when we don't know what that is. You and Hatcher have such a bond - truly - that I think it's only natural that he spend more time indoors with you.

And, if it helps, I don't think its going to take too much training. I think he must have been practicing his whole life to become a pampered pooch. It definitely agrees with him.

Any problems you have, you know you can ask me. But, I really think you'll enjoy it. I know we enjoy having our Ellie Belly around.

Here's a great story to honor Hatcher and his promotion into the human family on Monterrey St.:

Homeless dog tries to save dog hit by car in Chile
Mon Dec 8, 6:22 pm ETSANTIAGO, Chile – Chileans have a new hero: an apparently homeless dog that pulled the body of another dog through traffic off a busy highway. A surveillance camera on a Santiago freeway captured images of a dog trotting past speeding cars to pull the lifeless body of the other canine, which had been run over by a vehicle, away from traffic and onto the median strip.

The scene was broadcast by Chilean television stations and then posted on Web sites such as YouTube.com, and hundreds of thousands of people had viewed versions of it by Monday.

Highway crews removed both the dead and live dogs from the median strip of the Vespucio Norte Highway shortly after the Dec. 4 incident. But the rescuer dog ran away.

Authorities say images of the rescue prompted some people to call and offer to adopt the dog, but neither highway workers nor a television crew could find they animal.
