Things we Learn While Driving

OK, you all know that I don't like to fly. The jokes get old after awhile; but, if you were as sick as I am on a plane, you wouldn't fly either. For those of you who do fly, let's compare scenery. What do you see from the windows of the plane, that is if you are lucky enough to sit by a window. Do you see clouds? And then, do you see more clouds? How intriguing can that be? And depending on where you are traveling to, your trip is so short you only see three hours of this unbelievable scenery.

Let me tell you about driving to our destination. The trip is definitely longer than two or three hours if you are going out west or up north or over to Florida. This weekend our car takes us to Henderson, Nevada to see the Browns who went and ruined my life by moving (OK, only partially joking). We are driving to Nevada!

So far we have been driving 900 miles. We have seen flat Southeast Texas, hilly San Antonio and hilly and mountainous El Paso, TX. We have seen deer (although dead on the road which is sad), antelope and a sunset both evenings that were as different as night and day (is there a joke in there). Last night it was a beautiful red sunset in a blue sky. Tonight it was the most unusual sunset I have ever seen. The clouds almost looked silvery as the the sun reflected off the clouds. And then, there was a partial rainbow in those silvery clouds. Much more beautiful than clouds, clouds and clouds from a plane window.

What about what you listen to on your trip? In a plane, is the person next to you snoring? Is the old woman sitting next to you talking and talking? Or is the baby behind you screaming to get off the plane? Not in our car as we travel mile after mile. So far we have listened to only 1/3 of my Christmas songs that are on my ipod. I love Christmas music and Eric tolerates it. But, today I tolerated his Classic Radio Shows on his Sirius radio station. So I call that being even.

Tomorrow should be a beautiful drive. We will see mountains, snow, and many other beautiful creations that our Heavenly Father has put on the earth.

We have also seen many types of living. Large homes, beautiful homes on top of tall hills owned obviously by people that have some large amounts of money in the bank. And today, heartbreak. Small, and I mean small, delabidated homes with people living in them because it is all they can afford. I looked at those homes and realized how truly blessed every one is in our family.

We have seen homeless people walking along the interstate hoping for a ride to rest their weary feet. We have seen others begging on the street corners for a meal or a few dollars. They are dirty and ragged and have nowhere else to go. Do we judge them? Probably so. But only Heavenly Father knows of their needs. And we are blessed with a car, food, treats to keep us happy in the car along the way, and a warm bed at our destination. Doesn't seem fair, does it.

What have I learned so far on this trip? I need to be more grateful to my Heavenly Father for the life I have been given.

Though I prefer to fly (planes have readily accessible toilets), I know what you mean. When Kyle and I drove from Page, AZ to Vegas, I was on the edge of my seat - literally. It was STUNNING! When we reached Utah, we were literally driving through the mountains. I loved every minute of it. So, I know what you mean, it is rather beautiful.
