Insurance Companies

Why is it that something so simple as filling a prescription can be so drawn out and annoying?

Today I dropped three prescriptions off to be filled (yes, I guess I am a druggie!!). First problem, the insurance companies think they are God and control how often you fill your prescription. Mind you, we are the ones paying the ridiculous premiums; but we have no control over the filling of the prescription and how often.

I told the pharmacist (who is wonderful, by the way, if you need a good pharmacy--Target is it!) that I was going on vacation and I needed the prescriptions filled even though the insurance company might think it is a little early. She said, "No problem. I will call them and ask them to waive the minimum because of vacation." No problem? Little did she know what my prescriptions had gotten her into. Waive the minimum for vacation? Sure, we can do that. Generic refill instead of name brand? Uh-oh!! No can do. You see you have to be smarter than the computer and that's where insurance companies run into a problem. They hire people who follow the directions as per the book. But, when a problem comes up, they don't know what to do.

One of my prescriptions had just gotten a generic brand which meant $30 cheaper for me. However, Blue Cross and Blue Shield didn't have the right # for my generic prescription and therefore they said they couldn't have it filled. The poor pharmacist. She tried everything in her power to make them understand that she was holding the generic brand in her hand. No can do, says BC/BS. You have to have the right Code # for the medication. HELLO.....the number is on the bottle. No can do, says BC/BS, you have to have the right number. Maybe you should call other pharmacies in town and see how they are handling this. I felt so badly for our pharmacist. She tried with every inch of her being to get me the generic. But, alas. The insurance company won out in the end. It's not the end of the story. The pharmacist is sending out an e-mail and will phone call Monday morning to see if just maybe there is someone that speaks and understands intelligently at Blue Cross Blue Shield.

I am wondering, what exactly does BC/BS stand for? Bad connection/Bad Service? Any other ideas out there?

I feel your pain! Insurance companies are a rip off anyway. I just used Target for the first time last week and was quite impressed. I am glad you like them, too. I think I will change from CVS (they are so expensive and slow!) Welcome to the blogging world, now you just need to get Mom to do one!

What about Bogus Company/Berates Society?

I love your comments. Alisa, you will love Target pharmacy. They are quick (not like Wal-Mart which takes forever) and they are very personable. They will know you by name before you know it. As for your mom, tell her to get on the ball and learn this blogging thing. She will love it. Just show her how easy it is.
